Lukacs published History and Class Consciousness in 1923. As Stalinism became a more powerful force in the Communist Party, Lukács was subjected to increasingly strong attacks for deviating from the party line. In the mid-1920s, he wrote a sustained and passionate response to this onslaught. Unpublished at the time, Lukács himself thought the text had been destroyed. Recently, however, it was found in the newly opened archives of the CPSU in Moscow.
