The colonial/postcolonial model has primarily grown out of work done on India. Barlow, editor of positions, has collected a group of essays that examine the discourses of modernity and colonialism that are specific to the East Asian region and suggests that cultural critics have much to learn from a scholarship dedicated to rethinking the synchonicity of colonialism and modernity in that region. Contributors: Charles K. Armstrong, Tani E. Barlow, Fred Y.L. Chiu, Chungmoo Choi, Alan, S. Christy, Craig Clunas, James A. Fujii, James L. Hevia, Charles Shiro Inouye, Lydia H. Liu, Miriam Silverberg, Tomiyama Ichiro, Wang Hui
